P.L.Deshpande was born in Mumbai on 8 November 1919 to a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin family. His grandfather, Vaman Mangesh Dubhashi, was a Marathi poet and writer who translated Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali into Marathi. Deshpande studied at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya and Fergusson College in Pune. He also obtained a law degree from Government Law College, Mumbai.
